East Barnard is a cozy village on dirt roads with no traffic lights. It’s known for its rural charm, thriving local arts and community traditions. The Town of Barnard was chartered in 1761 on former Western Abenaki land. The village of East Barnard was settled beginning around 1785. Some of the first to build a home here were the Ellis family.

Located at an elevation of about 1,000 feet, the center of this village in the Green Mountains features a historic 1834 church, the community hall—and a former school and store, both now used as residences. In the late 1800s, East Barnard was a bustling area of farms and commerce. A large pond provided water power for mills … and prompted locals to refer to the village as the “Harbor.”

After that time, population, agriculture and industry declined, but many local families still trace their roots back decades—or more than a hundred years—while also welcoming new residents and visitors to this scenic hamlet.
